Job Duties: The DON, under the direction of the Administrator, is responsible and accountable for the provision of quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis. The DON has the administrative responsibility to take all reasonable steps within the authority of this position to ensure that optimal quality of care is delivered to support the goals of the NYS Veterans Home at Montrose, and to help residents reach and maintain their highest level of physical, mental and psychosocial well-being. The Director of Nursing Services will work closely with the Administrator and Medical Director in managing facility operations and will participate in decisions related to admissions and resident-related contractual agreements. Duties include, but are not limited to: • Plans, organizes, and administers nursing services to ensure the provision of nursing care for all residents through compliance with all federal and state codes, rules and regulations. • Develops and implements nursing policies and procedures and ensures they are maintained and current. • Reviews all Patient Review Instruments (PRIs) for potential admission to the Home. • Meets will all nursing staff to ensure the provision of high-quality resident care and evaluates all employees according to schedule. • Oversees Infection Control and Nursing Continuous Quality Improvement programs. Evaluates nursing practices to determine need for in-service education/training. • Ensures that nursing care supplies are appropriate. • Communicates with the Administrator on pertinent resident care or other issues. • Maintains departmental statistics and submits monthly reports to the Administrator. • Recruits, interviews and recommends appointment of nursing staff. • Coordinates nursing care with other departments through the Interdisciplinary Team approach. • Provides up-to-date information and reports as requested. Serves as a resource for the Home regarding Nursing Care standards. • Coordinates nursing student affiliations and training. • Attends and assures department staff attend all mandatory and other relevant inservice training, meet all continuing education and professional staff development requirements, and have working knowledge of proper fire and emergency preparedness procedures. • Develops, implements, evaluates and modifies as appropriate departmental Continuous Quality Improvement program. • Utilizes and assures that department staff utilize technology and state-of-the-art principles, procedures, concepts, and tools to maximize department efficiencies. Adapts and embraces change. • Serves as a role model for staff by displaying a positive attitude. Customer service, resident accommodation, and resident rights are top priorities. Minimum Requirements for Submission: • Active and unencumbered Professional Registered Nursing license in good standing with the New York State Board. • Successful completion and clearance of a background check, including minimum contract requirements for background check and in addition, verification of educational credentials and verification of past employment relevant to long term care or nursing leadership. • Experience that includes at least two years as a Director of Nursing or at least 5 years of Nursing Management experience in a long-term care setting. • Ability to begin assignment immediately upon contract execution.
